Mānuka Honey

Methylglyoxal (MGO) is a naturally occurring compound found in Manuka honey, responsible for its unique antibacterial properties. Unlike regular honey, where hydrogen peroxide provides the antimicrobial effect (which can be unstable), Manuka honey’s potency is largely due to MGO, which is more stable and effective even when exposed to heat and light.

MGO is derived from dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a compound found in the nectar of the Manuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium). Over time, DHA converts into MGO during the honey’s aging and storage process.

MGO is both an abbreviation for metholglyoxal and a measurement system used to show the level of MGO present in manuka honey. MGO as a measurement system is an easy and effective method to show the antibacterial properties of the honey.

MGO is a Direct measurement the concentration of Methylglyoxal in milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg). So, for example -  MGO 600+ means the honey contains at least 600 mg of MGO per kg.  The Higher the MGO values indicate stronger antibacterial properties and as a rule the rarer the Honey.

Our range of Manuka and different MGO levels is dependent on seasonal variation and climates, we have a stock of honey selectively aging to reach its full therapeutic and immune supporting benefits. Our core Manuka range includes

Classic Manuka 100-150 mgo

Premiere Manuka 300-350 mgo

Special reserve Manuka 400-650 mgo

Firstly, all mānuka honey exhibits antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. The reason we are concerned with the different strengths of mānuka honey is that the stronger the honey (MGO) the more powerful the antibacterial and antimicrobial effects. This means the different strengths are suited for different purposes.

Our Classic Manuka  MGO 100 - 150 is the least antimicrobial and is therefore suitable for lower levels of bacterial infection, skin irritation, blemishes and wound cleaning. It’s also great on toast or as an addition to a smoothie to fortify immunity.

The premier Manuka 300-350 is more powerful and therefore a more therapeutic product. This is great for areas that require more urgent care and for fighting off colds and other bacterial infections.

Our Special reserve Manuka, the  highest grade of 600 and above, is more powerful still and exhibits the strongest antimicrobial effect and is your best bet at fighting chronic infection using mānuka honey. We also highly recommend that with any infection it is hugely important that you visit a doctor urgently.

Yes, our honey is tested by a MPI registered lab to ensure it meets the criteria to be Manuka Honey or Multifloral manuka honey. For Manuka Honey and multifloral Manuka honey the honey is tested for 4 chemicas present in nectar and 1 DNA marker from Manuka pollen. These test distinguish between Monofloral Manuka and Multifloral Manuka.  All honey is tested and certified before it is packed

Our Honey is also tested for Glyphosate residue and is certified Glyphosate free

Our honey is not certified organic as we cannot control with 100 percent certainty where the bees forage. However,  our beekeeping philosophy and practice is focused on sustainability and bee health, our hives are cared for in the most natural way to ensure good bee health and high quality honey.

t's 100% natural, raw and unpasteurised. We don't add any bad stuff and we don't take away any good stuff, simple.

Storage & Usage

Store your honey in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. There’s no need to refrigerate it.

Honey has a very long shelf life if stored properly. However, natural crystallization may occur over time – this is normal and does not affect the quality.
